Attendance Allowance Rates: Weekly and Monthly Amounts Explained

Attendance Allowance is a UK benefit for people who have reached State Pension age and need help with personal care due to a disability or health condition. It is paid weekly and is not means-tested, so your income or savings do not affect the amount you receive. The allowance has two standard weekly rates, depending on the level of care or supervision you require.

Weekly Rates

  • Lower rate (£76.70 per week): For those needing frequent help or constant supervision during the day, or supervision at night.
  • Higher rate (£114.60 per week): For those needing help or supervision throughout both day and night, or if a medical professional has certified that the person is terminally ill (nearing the end of life).

These rates are reviewed periodically by the government. The rate you receive depends on your assessed care needs, not your financial situation.

Monthly Amounts

Attendance Allowance is paid weekly, but for budgeting purposes, you can estimate the monthly amount by multiplying the weekly rate by 52 (weeks in a year) and dividing by 12 (months). For example:

  • Lower rate: (£76.70 × 52) ÷ 12 = £332.47 per month (rounded to £332)
  • Higher rate: (£114.60 × 52) ÷ 12 = £496.40 per month (rounded to £496)

Payments are made directly into your bank, building society, or credit union account.

Changes in Circumstances

If your care needs change, your rate could be adjusted. It is important to report any changes in your condition or care requirements to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to ensure you receive the correct rate.

If you receive Constant Attendance Allowance at the same time as Attendance Allowance, your Attendance Allowance payments may be reduced by the amount of Constant Attendance Allowance you receive.

Additional Notes

  • Attendance Allowance is available to people living in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. If you live in Scotland, you should apply for Pension Age Disability Payment instead.
  • Attendance Allowance is not taxable and does not affect most other benefits, although it may increase eligibility for Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, or Council Tax Reduction.
