How to Prove You Need Supervision for Attendance Allowance When Living Alone in the UK

Attendance Allowance is a benefit for people living in Great Britain who have a disability or health condition that means they need extra help with personal care. It is paid at two different weekly rates depending on the level of help required. A key part of the claim is demonstrating that you need supervision or help because of your condition, especially if you live alone.

Understanding Supervision for Attendance Allowance

Supervision means needing someone to watch over you to prevent danger or to assist with tasks due to your disability or health condition. This can include:

  • Frequent help or constant supervision during the day
  • Supervision at night
  • Help or supervision both day and night

The lower rate of Attendance Allowance (£76.70 per week) is for those who need frequent help or constant supervision during the day, or supervision at night. The higher rate (£114.60 per week) is for those who require help or supervision throughout both day and night, or who are terminally ill.

Proving You Need Supervision When Living Alone

Living alone means it is especially important to clearly explain how your condition affects your ability to manage safely without help. When applying, provide detailed information about:

  1. Your daily difficulties: Describe tasks you struggle with or cannot do safely without supervision, such as preparing meals, taking medication, or moving around your home.
  2. Risks you face: Explain any dangers you encounter if unsupervised, for example, falls, confusion, or inability to respond in an emergency.
  3. How often you need help or supervision: Be specific about the frequency and type of help needed, whether constant or frequent during the day, or supervision at night.
  4. Medical or professional evidence: Include information from your GP, hospital, or care professionals that supports your need for supervision. This might be in the form of letters, reports, or assessments.

For example, you might say, “I need someone to check on me every hour during the day because I forget to take my medication and sometimes become disoriented,” or “At night, I need supervision to ensure I do not leave the house or fall.”

What Happens After You Apply

You can apply for Attendance Allowance online or by post. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will consider the information and medical evidence you provide to decide if you qualify and which rate you will receive.

If you live in Scotland, Attendance Allowance is replaced by Pension Age Disability Payment, so you should apply for that instead.

Additional Points

  • Attendance Allowance is not means-tested, so your income or savings do not affect your eligibility.
  • If your condition or circumstances change, you should report this to the DWP as it may affect your rate of Attendance Allowance.
  • Payments are made into your bank, building society, or credit union account.
