How to View or Check a Previous Self Assessment Tax Return

If you are a sole trader who files Self Assessment tax returns with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), you may sometimes need to view or check a return you submitted for a previous tax year. This can help you verify details, confirm figures, or prepare for future returns.

Accessing Previous Returns Online

The most straightforward way to view your past Self Assessment tax returns is through your personal HMRC online account. Once you have registered for Self Assessment and set up your Government Gateway login, you can:

  • Sign in to your HMRC online account.
  • Navigate to the Self Assessment section.
  • Select the tax year you want to view.
  • Access a summary of the submitted return and any calculations HMRC made.

This online service typically shows returns filed online for recent years. If you cannot find a specific year, it may be because the return was submitted on paper or the record is archived.

Viewing Paper Returns or Older Records

If you submitted a paper tax return or need information for a year not available online, you have a few options:

  • Check your own records: You should keep copies of all returns and supporting documents for at least 22 months after the end of the tax year to which they relate.
  • Request a copy from HMRC: You can contact HMRC by phone or post to ask for a copy of your previously filed return. There may be a charge for this service.

Bear in mind that HMRC may take some time to process such requests, so it is best to keep your own copies whenever possible.

Important Points to Remember

  • HMRC does not automatically send you copies of past returns once filed. You must access them via your online account or keep your own copies.
  • If you have not registered for Self Assessment before, you must notify HMRC by 5 October following the end of the tax year you need to file for.
  • Always keep accurate records, such as bank statements and receipts, to support the information you report on your returns.

Viewing your previous Self Assessment tax returns can help you check your tax affairs, prepare current returns, or resolve any queries with HMRC. For the most reliable and up-to-date information, always refer to the official HMRC online services.
