How to Claim Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Without a National Insurance Number

When applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in Great Britain, you are usually asked to provide your National Insurance (NI) number to help the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) identify your records quickly. However, if you do not have an NI number, you can still start a claim.

Starting Your Claim Without an NI Number

If you don’t have a National Insurance number, you should still call the PIP new claims phone line to begin your application. The phone number is 0800 917 2222 (Relay UK users dial 18001 first). When you call, you will be asked some basic questions about yourself and your disability or health condition.

During this call, you can explain that you do not have an NI number. The DWP will still accept your claim and guide you through the process. They may ask for other identifying information such as your date of birth, contact details, and medical information.

What You’ll Need Instead

  • Date of birth
  • Contact details (phone number, address)
  • Details of your health condition or disability
  • Information about your doctor or health worker (name, address, phone number)
  • Bank or building society details for payment purposes
  • Any relevant supporting documents such as prescription lists or care plans

Your National Insurance number is helpful but not mandatory. If you do not have one, the DWP will use other details to process your claim.

Completing the ‘How Your Disability Affects You’ Form

After the initial call, you will receive a form asking how your disability or condition affects your daily life. You can complete this form online or by post. If you applied by phone, you will usually receive the form within two weeks.

Make sure to fill in this form carefully and include any supporting evidence you have. If you need more time to complete it, contact the PIP enquiry line to ask for an extension.

Additional Notes

  • If you live in Scotland, you cannot apply for PIP but must apply for Adult Disability Payment instead.
  • If you live in Northern Ireland, the claims process differs; check the relevant guidance.
  • If you are nearing the end of life (for example, due to a life-limiting illness), there is a different way to claim PIP.

For up-to-date details or any uncertainties, it is best to contact the PIP new claims phone line directly. They can provide specific advice tailored to your situation, including how to proceed without an NI number.
