How to Fill In a DVLA V62 Form: Step-by-Step Help

The DVLA V62 form is used to apply for a vehicle registration certificate, commonly called a log book (V5C), in Great Britain. This application is necessary if you need a replacement V5C or if you are not yet registered as the vehicle’s keeper and need to update the records. The form is a paper-only document and must be posted to the DVLA; it cannot be submitted online or electronically.

Step 1: Obtain the V62 Form

You can get the V62 form from the DVLA website as a printable PDF or by contacting the DVLA directly. Remember, this form is print-only, so you will need to fill it in by hand.

Step 2: Complete Your Personal Details

  • Your name and address: Enter your full name and current address. This should be the address where you want the new V5C sent.
  • Contact details: Provide a telephone number or email address in case the DVLA needs to contact you about your application.

Step 3: Provide Vehicle Details

  • Registration number: Write the vehicle’s registration number exactly as it appears on any existing documents.
  • Make and model: Include the vehicle’s make and model to help identify it correctly.
  • VIN or chassis number: If known, include the vehicle identification number to help avoid delays.

Step 4: Explain Why You Are Applying

  • Lost or stolen V5C: Tick the appropriate box if you are applying because your log book was lost or stolen.
  • Change of keeper not registered: Use the form if you have bought a vehicle but are not yet registered as the keeper.
  • Other reasons: If applying for other reasons (for example, a damaged V5C), indicate this clearly.

Step 5: Include the Fee if Required

A fee may apply to your application. Check the latest DVLA guidance to confirm the current amount and acceptable payment methods. Send the fee along with your completed form by post.

Step 6: Sign and Date the Form

Make sure you sign and date the form in the designated sections. An unsigned form may be rejected.

Step 7: Post Your Application

Send the completed form and payment (if applicable) to the DVLA’s postal address. The form cannot be submitted electronically.

Additional Notes

  • You can tax your vehicle at the same time as applying for a new V5C using the V62 form, if needed.
  • If you do not need to make any changes to the log book, you can apply for a duplicate V5C online instead, which is usually quicker.
  • Keep copies of all documents you send for your records.
  • Processing times may vary; check the DVLA website for the most current information.
