How to Correctly Complete and Submit a DVLA V62 Form for Vehicle Registration Replacement

If you need to apply for a vehicle registration certificate (commonly known as a log book or V5C) and cannot do so online, the DVLA form V62 is the appropriate option. This form is mainly used when you do not have a V5C, need to change details, or are not yet registered as the vehicle’s keeper.

When to Use the V62 Form

  • You have lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed your V5C and need a replacement.
  • You need to apply for a V5C but cannot use the online service because you want to change details or are not yet the registered keeper.
  • You did not receive a V5C for a new vehicle or took your vehicle out of the UK and now need to register it.

Note that if you only need a replacement V5C without any changes, and you are the registered keeper, you can apply online or by phone, which is usually quicker and costs £25. The V62 form must be completed and posted to the DVLA; it cannot be submitted electronically.

How to Complete the V62 Form

The V62 form is a printed document, available from DVLA outlets or downloadable for printing. It cannot be filled out digitally—you must complete it by hand.

  1. Provide Vehicle Details: Include the registration number, make, model, and vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis number as accurately as possible.
  2. Provide Your Details: Enter your full name and address. Ensure these are correct as the new V5C will be posted to this address.
  3. Explain Your Reason for Applying: Indicate why you are applying, for example, lost or damaged V5C, or you are a new keeper needing registration.
  4. Include the Appropriate Fee: If a fee applies, include payment as instructed on the form. Check the current fee with DVLA as it may change.
  5. Sign and Date the Form: Your signature is required to validate the application.

Submitting the Form

Once completed, send the V62 form by post to the DVLA address indicated on the form. Do not send it electronically or by email.

You can tax your vehicle at the same time as applying for your V5C replacement once your application is processed. However, you do not need to wait for the new V5C to tax your vehicle if you have other valid means to do so.

Important Considerations

  • If you need to change any details on the V5C or are not yet the registered keeper, you must use the V62 form and apply by post; online applications are only for replacements without changes.
  • If you have sold or transferred a vehicle without a log book, you should notify the DVLA by post.
  • If you do not receive your new V5C within 6 weeks, contact the DVLA to check the status of your application.
  • Keep a copy of the completed form and any payment receipts for your records.
