How to Register for Self Assessment for the First Time as a Sole Trader
If you have started working as a sole trader in the UK, you will usually need to register for Self Assessment with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). This is the system HMRC uses to collect Income Tax from people whose tax is not automatically deducted through PAYE, such as self-employed individuals.
When to Register
You must register for Self Assessment by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started your business. For example, if you began trading anytime between 6 April 2023 and 5 April 2024, you need to register by 5 October 2024. Missing this deadline can result in a penalty.
How to Register
You can register online through the HMRC website. When registering as a sole trader, you will need to provide:
- Your personal details, including your National Insurance number
- Details about your business, such as the start date of your self-employment
- Your contact information
Once registered, HMRC will send you a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number by post. You will need this to complete your Self Assessment tax return.
After Registration
After receiving your UTR, you must file your first tax return for the relevant tax year. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April the following year. You should complete your tax return after the tax year has ended.
Keep accurate records of your income and expenses throughout the year, such as invoices, receipts, and bank statements. These will help you complete your return correctly.
Deadlines and Penalties
- You must submit your tax return by 31 January following the end of the tax year if filing online (for example, 31 January 2025 for the 2023-24 tax year).
- If you miss the registration deadline or fail to file your return on time, HMRC may charge interest and penalties.
Exceptions and Additional Information
Not everyone who is self-employed needs to register for Self Assessment if their income is below certain thresholds or if they have other arrangements through PAYE. If you are unsure whether you need to register, you should check directly with HMRC.
If you have previously registered but did not need to file a return for a tax year, you must still tell HMRC by 5 October if your circumstances change and you now need to complete a tax return.
