Self Assessment Login: How to Access Your HMRC Account for Sole Traders

If you are a sole trader in the UK and need to complete a Self Assessment tax return, you must access your HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) online account. This account allows you to file your tax return, view your tax calculations, and manage payments.

Setting Up Your HMRC Online Account

To use the online Self Assessment service, you first need to register for Self Assessment with HMRC if you have not done so before. This is essential if HMRC has asked you to send a tax return or if you started trading recently.

You must notify HMRC by 5 October following the end of the tax year (which ends on 5 April) if you need to complete a tax return but have not sent one before, or if you registered as self-employed but did not previously need to send a return for that tax year. You do this by registering for Self Assessment online. After registering, HMRC will send you a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) and instructions to set up your online account.

Logging Into Your HMRC Account

  1. Go to the official HMRC website and select the Self Assessment login section.
  2. Enter your Government Gateway user ID and password. These credentials are created when you set up your online account.
  3. If you have forgotten your login details, you can recover them through the HMRC website using your email address and other personal information.
  4. Once logged in, you can access your Self Assessment tax return and other related services.

Filing Your Self Assessment Tax Return

After logging in, you can complete your tax return online. You will need records of your income and expenses, such as bank statements and receipts, to fill in the form accurately. HMRC calculates your tax based on the information you provide.

You must submit your tax return by 31 January following the end of the tax year. If you file late, you may have to pay penalties and interest on any tax owed.

Additional Points for Sole Traders

  • Keeping accurate financial records throughout the year will make filing your return easier and help ensure the information you enter is correct.
  • If you have never filed a tax return before, or if HMRC has not contacted you but you are self-employed, it is your responsibility to register and file on time.
  • If you prefer not to file online, paper forms (SA100) are available. The deadline for paper returns is earlier—31 October following the end of the tax year—so be sure to check the correct dates.

For detailed guidance on registering and logging in, always refer to the official HMRC website. Procedures and deadlines can change, so checking the latest official information is recommended.
