Using Form V62 for a Car Bought from a Dealer Without a V5C
If you have purchased a vehicle from a dealer and have not received the vehicle’s registration certificate (V5C), you will need to apply for a new one using form V62. This form is intended for situations where you are not yet registered as the vehicle’s keeper with the DVLA or where the V5C is missing.
When to Use Form V62
- You bought the car but the dealer did not provide the V5C log book.
- You are not yet registered as the vehicle’s keeper with the DVLA.
- You need to apply for a new V5C because the original was lost, stolen, or never received.
The V62 form is a paper application that must be completed and posted to the DVLA. It cannot be submitted online or electronically. Along with the form, you should include the green ‘new keeper’ slip given by the dealer, if available. This slip is from the most recent V5C and helps prove your ownership. If you do not provide this slip, you will need to pay a £25 fee for the new V5C.
Practical Steps
- Obtain a V62 form, available from the DVLA website or from a Post Office.
- Complete the form carefully with accurate vehicle and personal details.
- Include the green new keeper slip from the dealer, if you have it.
- Send the form and the £25 fee by post to the DVLA address.
- Wait for your new V5C to arrive by post, which usually takes around 4 weeks.
If you do not receive your V5C within 6 weeks and have not contacted the DVLA, you may need to pay the £25 replacement fee again.
Taxing Your Vehicle Without a V5C
You can tax your vehicle while waiting for the new V5C by:
- Using the V62 application if you are the current keeper.
- Using the green new keeper slip from the dealer, if you have it.
- Visiting a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax to complete the process.
Note that if you are the new keeper and do not have either a green new keeper slip or a V5C, you cannot tax the vehicle until you receive one of these documents.
Important Notes
- The V62 form is only for applying for a new or replacement V5C; it is not for transferring ownership online.
- The V62 form cannot be completed digitally; it must be printed and posted.
- If your vehicle was previously registered outside the UK or you took it abroad, different rules may apply.
- Always check the date on the green new keeper slip matches the most recent V5C issue date to avoid delays or additional fees.
