How to Tax a Car Without a V5C or New Keeper Slip

If you need to tax a vehicle in Great Britain but do not have the vehicle’s V5C registration certificate (log book) or a green new keeper slip, you must follow a specific process using form V62. This situation commonly arises if you have lost your V5C, never received one, or are not yet registered as the vehicle’s keeper.

Using Form V62 to Apply for a Vehicle Registration Certificate

Form V62 is the official application to obtain a replacement or new V5C. It is a paper form that cannot be completed online and must be posted to the DVLA. You can use this form if:

  • You are the current keeper but do not have a V5C
  • You need to register as the new keeper but do not have the new keeper slip
  • You want to update vehicle details on the V5C

When you submit the V62 form, you can also tax your vehicle at the same time. To do this, send the completed form along with the £25 fee for the V5C application to the DVLA address provided on the form.

Taxing Without a V5C or New Keeper Slip

If you are the current registered keeper but lack the V5C, you must first apply for a replacement V5C by post using the V62 form. You can then tax your vehicle simultaneously either online, by phone, or at a Post Office. At the Post Office, you will need to bring:

  • The completed V62 application form
  • Payment for the £25 V5C application fee
  • Payment for your vehicle tax
  • Evidence of a current MOT if applicable (for example, an MOT certificate or a screenshot of the MOT history)

If you have just bought the vehicle and do not have a new keeper slip, you cannot tax the vehicle until you receive that slip or apply for a new V5C using form V62. The new keeper slip must be from the most recent V5C issued for the vehicle. Without it, you will need to apply for a new V5C by post and pay the £25 fee.

Additional Points to Consider

  • You cannot complete the V62 form digitally; it must be printed and posted.
  • The DVLA usually takes up to 4 weeks to process V62 applications. If you have not received your V5C after 6 weeks and have not contacted the DVLA, you may need to pay the £25 fee again.
  • If you took your vehicle out of the UK and do not have a V5C, you should contact the driving authority in the country where the vehicle is registered and notify the DVLA in writing with your details and the date the vehicle left the UK.
  • In Northern Ireland, when taxing a vehicle at the Post Office, you also need to provide a valid MOT certificate and proof of insurance or cover note.

In summary, to tax a vehicle without a V5C or new keeper slip in Great Britain, use form V62 to apply for a replacement registration certificate and tax the vehicle at the same time. If you have recently bought the vehicle but do not have a new keeper slip, you must wait to receive it or apply for a new V5C before taxing.
