How to apply for a V62 to register a vehicle with no logbook or green slip
If you are the current keeper of a vehicle but do not have the vehicle’s logbook (V5C) or the green ‘new keeper’ slip, you can apply for a vehicle registration certificate using form V62. This form is used specifically to apply for a new V5C when you need to register a vehicle or make changes to its details and do not have the original documentation.
When to use form V62
- You do not have a V5C logbook for the vehicle.
- You did not receive a V5C when you bought the vehicle and do not have the green ‘new keeper’ slip.
- You need to change the vehicle details on the V5C but cannot do so online.
- You are not yet registered as the vehicle’s keeper.
The V62 form is a printed document that must be completed by hand and sent by post to the DVLA. It cannot be completed online or emailed.
How to apply using form V62
- Download and print the V62 form from the official source or obtain a copy from a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax.
- Complete the form carefully, providing all requested details about yourself and the vehicle.
- If you do not have the green ‘new keeper’ slip from the seller, you will need to pay a £25 fee when submitting your application.
- Include payment by cheque or postal order made payable to ‘DVLA, Swansea’ if a fee is required.
- Send the completed form and payment (if applicable) by post to:
DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1DD
Important points to consider
- If you have the green ‘new keeper’ slip from the most recent V5C, include it with your V62 application to avoid the £25 fee.
- If you have lost both the V5C and the green slip, you will need to pay the £25 fee to obtain a replacement V5C.
- You can tax your vehicle at the same time as applying for the V5C by visiting a Post Office that offers vehicle tax services. Bring the completed V62 form and payment for both the V5C application and vehicle tax.
- It usually takes about 4 weeks to receive the new V5C after applying by post. If you do not receive it within 6 weeks, contact the DVLA.
- If the vehicle was taken out of the UK and you do not have a V5C, you should contact the relevant driving authority in the country where the vehicle is registered and notify the DVLA in writing, including your name, address, the date you took the vehicle out of the country, and where to send any vehicle tax refund you may be entitled to.
Remember, the V62 is only for applying for a registration certificate when you do not have the logbook or green slip and need to register the vehicle or change details. If you simply need a duplicate V5C without making changes, you can apply online instead.
