How to Use a DVLA V62 Form to Register a Vehicle Bought from a Private Seller Without a Logbook

If you have purchased a vehicle privately in Great Britain and the seller did not provide you with the vehicle’s logbook (the V5C registration certificate), you need to apply for a new V5C to register yourself as the vehicle’s keeper.

What is the V62 Form?

The V62 is a paper application form used to request a new vehicle registration certificate (logbook) from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). It is specifically for situations where you do not have the existing V5C document, such as when you buy a vehicle without a logbook.

Steps to Register Your Vehicle Using Form V62

  1. Obtain the V62 form: You can get a V62 form from the Post Office or download and print it from the official DVLA website.
  2. Complete the form: Fill in all the required details about yourself and the vehicle. Be as accurate as possible to avoid delays.
  3. Include supporting documents: If you have the green ‘new keeper’ slip from the seller (which comes from the most recent V5C), include it with your application. This slip confirms the seller was the last registered keeper. Including this slip means you will not have to pay the £25 fee. If you do not have this slip, you must still apply but will need to pay a £25 fee for a replacement V5C.
  4. Pay the fee: A £25 fee applies if you do not include the green new keeper slip. Include a cheque or postal order made payable to “DVLA, Swansea.”
  5. Send the application by post: Post the completed form, fee (if applicable), and any supporting documents to the DVLA address shown on the form.

What Happens Next?

Once DVLA receives your V62 application, they will process it and send you a new V5C registration certificate in your name. This usually takes around 4 weeks, though it may take longer depending on demand.

Taxing Your Vehicle Without a Logbook

You can tax your vehicle at the same time as applying for the V5C using the V62 form. Alternatively, you can tax your vehicle at a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax by bringing the completed V62 form and payment for the vehicle tax.

Note that if you are the new keeper but do not yet have a V5C or new keeper slip, you cannot tax the vehicle online or by phone until you receive the new V5C or new keeper slip from DVLA.

Important Points to Remember

  • The V62 form must be completed on paper and posted; it cannot be submitted online or by email.
  • If you have the green new keeper slip from the seller, include it to avoid the £25 fee. Without it, the fee applies.
  • If you need to update any details on the V5C (for example, if the vehicle details are incorrect), you must use the V62 form and pay the £25 fee.
  • If you took the vehicle out of the UK and do not have a V5C, you should contact the driving authority of the country where the vehicle is now registered and notify DVLA in writing with your details and the date the vehicle left the UK.

For the most current guidance and to download the form, check the official DVLA website. The process and fees described apply to vehicles registered in Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales).
