Applying for a V62 When Your Vehicle Was Registered Abroad and You Now Live in the UK

If you have moved to the UK and brought a vehicle that was previously registered abroad, you may need to apply for a UK vehicle registration certificate (commonly known as a V5C or log book). If the vehicle is not yet registered with the DVLA in your name, you must use form V62 to apply for a new registration certificate.

What is form V62?

Form V62 is the official paper application used to request a vehicle registration certificate from the DVLA when you are not yet registered as the keeper of the vehicle or need to make changes to the registration details. It is a printed form that must be completed by hand and posted to the DVLA. Electronic submissions are not accepted.

When to use form V62 for vehicles registered abroad

  • If your vehicle was registered outside the UK and you have imported it, you will not have a UK V5C log book.
  • Before you can tax or use the vehicle on UK roads, you usually need to register it with the DVLA.
  • Because you do not have an existing UK registration, you cannot request a duplicate log book online; instead, you must apply by post using form V62.
  • The form allows you to apply for a new V5C in your name, effectively registering the vehicle with the DVLA.

How to complete and submit form V62

  1. Obtain the latest version of form V62 from the official DVLA website or by contacting the DVLA.
  2. Fill in the form carefully with your details and the vehicle information, including any foreign registration numbers and import details.
  3. Include any supporting documents required to prove ownership and import status, such as customs paperwork or foreign registration certificates.
  4. Include the appropriate fee with your application, if applicable. The DVLA website will confirm current fees.
  5. Post the completed form and documents to the DVLA address specified on the form.

It is important to note that the V62 application process is separate from vehicle taxation and MOT requirements. However, once your V5C application is processed, you will be able to tax your vehicle at the same time if needed.

Additional considerations

  • Because the V62 form cannot be submitted online, you should allow time for postal delivery and DVLA processing.
  • If you do not need to change any details on an existing UK log book (for example, if you already have a V5C in your name), you may be able to request a duplicate online instead.
  • For imported vehicles, you may also need to provide evidence of vehicle approval (such as an Individual Vehicle Approval certificate) depending on the vehicle type and age. Check the official guidance on imported vehicle registration.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, including fees and detailed requirements, consult the official DVLA guidance on applying for a vehicle registration certificate using form V62.
