How to Apply for a DVLA V62 Form When Your Vehicle Has No Previous Registered Keeper in the UK
If you have a vehicle that has never been registered with a keeper in the UK, you cannot tax or use it on UK roads until you have obtained a UK registration certificate (V5C). In this case, you need to apply for a vehicle registration certificate using the DVLA’s form V62.
What is Form V62?
Form V62 is an application for a vehicle registration certificate, commonly known as a log book (V5C). This form is used when a vehicle’s details are not currently on the DVLA system, including vehicles with no previous registered keeper in the UK. It is also used if you need to register a vehicle or make changes to the log book that cannot be completed online.
Applying for a V62 When There is No Previous UK Keeper
If your vehicle has never been registered in the UK, you must complete form V62 and send it by post to the DVLA. The form is only available as a print-only version and cannot be completed digitally.
- Obtain the latest version of form V62 from the official DVLA source or a DVLA office.
- Complete all required sections carefully, providing accurate details about the vehicle, including make, model, and identification numbers such as the VIN or chassis number.
- Include any supporting documents that prove your ownership and the vehicle’s history, such as purchase invoices or certificates from the previous country.
- Pay any applicable fee as indicated on the form or accompanying guidance.
- Post the completed form and supporting documents to the DVLA address specified on the form.
Because the vehicle has no previous UK registered keeper, the DVLA will treat the application as a new registration. Once accepted, they will issue a V5C registration certificate in your name, confirming you as the registered keeper.
What Happens After Applying?
After the DVLA receives your V62 form, they will review the details and supporting evidence. If everything is in order, they will issue a new V5C certificate. You will be able to tax your vehicle at the same time if needed, either online or by other available methods.
It is important that you do not tax or use the vehicle on UK roads until you have received the V5C, as the vehicle is not legally registered without it.
Exceptions and Additional Notes
- If you only need a duplicate V5C and no changes are required, you can apply online instead of using form V62.
- The V62 form cannot be submitted electronically; postal submission is mandatory.
- The process and requirements may differ if the vehicle is imported or has special circumstances; check directly with the DVLA for specific guidance.
