Applying for a V62 When Your Vehicle Has No Current MOT Certificate

If you need to apply for a vehicle registration certificate (commonly known as a log book or V5C) using form V62 but your vehicle does not have a current MOT certificate, there are some important practical points to understand.

What is Form V62?

Form V62 is used to apply for a new or replacement V5C when you do not have one, or when you need to make changes to the vehicle’s registered keeper details and cannot do so online. The form must be completed on paper and posted to the DVLA along with any applicable fee.

Does the MOT Status Affect Your V62 Application?

Having no current MOT certificate does not prevent you from applying for a V62. The MOT test and the vehicle registration certificate are separate matters. The DVLA issues the V5C to record the registered keeper of the vehicle, but it does not require a valid MOT certificate as part of the V62 application process.

However, be aware:

  • If your vehicle is over three years old, it legally requires a valid MOT to be driven or taxed on public roads.
  • You can apply for and receive the V5C using form V62 even if your vehicle does not have a current MOT.
  • You will be able to tax the vehicle at the same time as applying for the V5C if you wish, but you must ensure the vehicle meets legal requirements, including having a valid MOT, before driving it on public roads.

Practical Example

Suppose you have bought a vehicle without a current V5C and it does not have a valid MOT. You can complete form V62 to apply for the registration certificate in your name. When sending the form, include the appropriate fee. Once the DVLA processes your application, they will send you the new V5C. You can then tax the vehicle if you wish, but remember that without a valid MOT, you cannot legally drive the vehicle on public roads.

Where to Confirm Details

Because the V62 process is separate from MOT testing, if you have specific questions about MOT requirements or the legality of using a vehicle without an MOT, you should consult official guidance on MOT testing or contact the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). For the latest and most accurate information about applying for a V5C using form V62, refer to the official DVLA guidance.
